Review: Fat Girl

Fat Girl: April FloresFat Girl: April Flores by Carlos Batts

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is a book compiled by photographer Carlos Batts.
It is a collection of photographs of his wife and muse who happens to be a plus-sized girl.

The title and cover are both very provocative.
- The title is provocative in an emotional way - I always worry about my weight and about being fat.
- The cover is provocative in the way it is glorifying not being thin.

Each of the chapters gives a little insight into the reasoning behind the photo shoots and candid shots. It also gives a wonderful perspective on being large. I feel a little empowered already. If you want happiness, then be happy! Don't wait for it to happen, make it happen.

I was working at a coffee house and there was a regular customer that wold come in daily. He was always happy, and in such a good mood. I asked him how he could always be so happy and he told me that happiness is hard. He said that he had to work on it everyday. Those words stuck with me, and from then on I began to realize that happiness is a choice. Once I figured that out, there was no going back.

The photographs are what I would describe as erotic.
You will see naked flesh - Lots of it.
The whole time I was reviewing this book I was wondering what I was going to write about it. I wasn't sure if I should share the following, but what the hell, or as April Says "Fuck it. Let's see what happens."
Anyway, the same as when reading all my smutty books (which we have no problem talking about amongst ourselves) this book was hot. The combination of glorified large woman and the erotic poses left me slightly turned on. But I think because these are real people and not fictional smut (I say this word with great affection) there is more of a taboo on the emotions that are evoked.

I wanted to have a clear statement, a goal for exposing myself in such an intimate, raw, and honest way. I decided to use my body and work as a tool to make a statement: Fat women can be sexy. I want to challenge the norm of what is considered beautiful and desirable.

Alternate Book Cover...

On a similar note - this book cover made me think of a particular Big Bang Theory episode...
Amy: Did you know that the iconic Valentine's heart shape is not actually based on the shape of a human heart, but rather on the shape of the buttocks of a female bending over
Penny: Oh, so I spent 7th grade dotting my I's with asses? Cool.
