My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Shattered by H.M. Ward is the fourth book in The Secret Life of Trystan Scott series. Book three ended with a very violent altercation between Trystan and his abusive father. Trystan tries to make his escape out the front door and comes face to face with Mari. In order to protect her he slams the door closed screaming at her to run. Intense, huh? Book four begins right where three left off.
Mari's desperate attempt to save Trystan by placing herself in the path of danger is touching. His reaction to her sacrifice gives him the strength of will he's needed to finally fight back and defend himself so he can, in turn, defend Mari.
When the dust settles, after the police have left, Trystan and Mari still have to deal with the secrets, the Brie drama, and Mari's distant, coldhearted parents. Despite everything, they are the glue that holds each other together. They will need this glue when the secrets are outed and the world finally finds out who Day Jones really is.
Trystan looks at his hand, still clenched tight. That fist. Oh god. He didn’t want to fight back. Fighting back makes it worse. Fighting back makes him like his father.
The moment remains perfect, as if it’s suspended in time. We cling to each other, hoping to God that there’s more for us, that there’s a way I can hold onto him. But, Trystan is like a snowflake. I’m afraid that if I try to close my hand around him, he’ll disappear from my life.
There is no hope. There is no peace. Accepting it makes it easier to wade through the day to day stuff.
I can be talking about the most horrible thing that ever happened to me, but with you here, the pain lessens. I feel like I’ll get through it and everything might be all right after all.
Trystan’s heart slams into his chest, thumping harder and faster. His breathing becomes jagged as his body tenses. They know.
