An avid reader since her childhood years and being an only child, Roberta always enjoyed the company of her fictional friends from the children’s books she loved reading, while she dreamed of writing her own stories one day. It was when she discovered novels by authors Rosamunde Pilcher and Maeve Binchy in her teenage years that she realized it was time she put down in words the stories she had kept well hidden in her mind until then. What started as a hobby, soon turned into a real passion and a way of life, until she could no longer keep the stories to herself, and decided to get over her fears and share them with the world. Roberta lives in Italy, but her dream is to move out of her country and live either in a thatched cottage in the Irish countryside or in a country house with a swing on the back porch, somewhere in the United States, where she would love to spend her days writing novels as a full-time job, and maybe one day even get as far as writing a screenplay for a movie.
ALTERNATIVE POV:
The day Ryan met Valerie - Exclusive for the blitz.
It had been raining all day so Ryan had been happy to spend some time at the Music Club with his grandfather Thomas. His friends from the soccer team had asked him to go check out the latest action movie at the multiplex downtown but he’d turned them down. He knew it was unusual for a fifteen-year-old but he preferred spending time talking about old music with his grandfather’s friends at the Club rather than checking out chicks with his own friends. That was just the way he was and he didn’t care if his friends found it odd. One day, when he’d be a famous pianist, they’d understand. He’d been appointed as the deejay that day so he was checking out some records to pick the next one he’d put on once Moon River ended when his grandfather nudged him.
“Come along, Ryan. I want to introduce you to Paddy’s granddaughter. I don’t think you kids have met before.”
Ryan shrugged and followed Thomas. The last thing he wanted was for his grandfather to start introducing him to girls. In the best of cases, she’d be an annoying girl who’d try to get him to go out on a date with her. He’d had a couple of girls asking him out recently at school and he’d always turned them down; he wasn’t interested in spending time with girls right now. His friends made fun of him because he hadn’t kissed a girl yet and he didn’t date but he didn’t really care. He had his hands full with school, soccer and piano lessons; he didn’t want to give up on his passion because some clingy girl wanted him all to herself. There’d be time for that in the future, he didn’t worry too much about it.
They zigzagged across the room, avoiding the people dancing in the middle of the room, and reached Paddy, his grandfather’s very best friend and co-founder of the Club. Thomas took the girl’s hand and smiled, telling her how much she’d grown since the last time he saw her.The girl, whose name was Valerie, smiled sheepishly and Thomas stepped aside, introducing her to Ryan.
“Hello,” she said in a small voice and staring at him as if she was afraid he’d eat her alive. Ryan felt something warm his heart and gave her a crooked smile, hoping it’d put her at ease.
“Hi, what’s up? Nice to meet you.”
She was cute, with shoulder-length blonde hair and blue eyes; still, it wasn’t that kind of cute his friends would use to define a chick they were after. He had no idea what age she was but she looked barely a child and when she’d looked up at him and their eyes had met, he’d felt some kind of protective instinct, as if she could become the little sister he’d always wanted to have.
Besides, the fact that she was here, in a music club with old people who loved old music instead of shopping with her friends proved that she was different from the silly girls at school, the ones he always made sure to stay away from.
His grandfather stepped in and nudged Ryan. “Now, why don’t you guys spend some time together? Show her around, Ryan, so Paddy and I can play cards with our friends. Have fun, kids,” he said and walked away, pulling Valerie’s grandfather with him.
As soon as they were alone, Ryan noticed she was almost shaking, and the protective instinct took hold of him again. Yes, there was definitely something about that girl that made him want to protect her from the world and he had a feeling they’d become good friends.
“Fancy playing some old records? I understand your grandpa’s brought you here ‘cause you like old music, right?” he asked, pointing his thumb toward the bookcase with the records. She nodded, tucking her hands deep inside the pockets of her dark jeans. “Cool, let’s go. Oh, and mind the dancers; they don’t really care about stepping on other people’s feet.”
He grinned and her face cracked into a sweet smile. He was pretty sure he’d managed to break through her wall now.
