Q&A with Melissa Pearl

Melissa Pearl was born in Auckland, New Zealand, but has spent much of her life abroad, living in countries such as Jordan, Cyprus and Pakistan... not to mention a nine month road trip around North America with her husband. "Best. Year. Ever!!" She now lives in China with her husband and two sons. She is a trained elementary teacher, but writing is her passion. Since becoming a full time mother she has had the opportunity to pursue this dream and her debut novel hit the internet in November 2011. Since then she has continued to produce a steady stream of books. Recently she signed with Evatopia Press and her first Evatopia book is coming out in February 2014 - True Colors, The Masks Series #1. She is very excited to be trying out new things this year while continuing to publish under her own name as well. She has six books planned for 2014 and is excited about writing each and every one of them.

"I am passionate about writing. It stirs a fire in my soul that I never knew I had. I want to be the best writer I can possibly be and transport my readers into another world where they can laugh, cry and fall in love."

Q&A

1) You are from New Zealand travelled across North America for almost a year, and now live in China. Why so much motion in your life?

My parents were missionaries, which is why we travelled when I was a kid. The North America road trip had been on my radar for years. I’ve always loved the States and when I met my husband, I told him, if he wanted to marry me then he had to factor in a trip to the States. Thankfully he was really into it, so we started saving and five years after we got married, we took one year off and did an awesome road trip around North America. We now live in China, because my husband teaches at an International School here. I think because I was raised as a traveller, it’s in my blood. I can’t imagine ever staying in one place for the rest of my life…although, being away really does make you appreciate home :D

2) You've written paranormal, supernatural and fantasy romance - do you have a favorite or do your stories just come to you without your conscious effort at choosing a genre?

The stories just come to me. I don’t tend to specifically choose a genre, I just have a story hit me and think, “Hmmmm - what genre does that fit into?”
I’m having a lot of fun with contemporary romance and romantic suspense at the moment. Most of the stories I have planned over the next three years are in those two categories :)

3) (Time Spirit Trilogy) if there was one thing you could go back in time and change what would it be?

Hmmmmmm - good question!! I would say a past relationship that really messed with me, but then I think that the trials of life actually make us stronger, so as horrible as that experience was, I wouldn’t want to change it, because it made me who I am today.

4) (Betwixt) Do you believe in ghosts or spirits? If yes, have you ever had a spooky encounter?

I believe that there is a spiritual realm - angels and demons type thing. I’ve never seen a ghost or anything, but I have had those moments of sheer terror and then after a little praying had a sense of comfort. I guess that’s the closest I’ve ever gotten to a spooky encounter :D

5) (Songbird) Do you sing? you know, like, a lot, and in places that are more public than the car while driving or shower etc?

Yes - I LOVE to sing. I am the lead singer in the alto section of the community choir I have joined and I also do a lot of karaoke. I just love it so much :)

Thanks for asking such brilliant questions. I really enjoyed answering them :D
