‘You do this a lot?’ I asked abruptly.
He took a step closer. I took a step back. It was timed so well, it was almost as if we were dancing some sort of macabre waltz.
He laughed when we moved in unison.
‘Depends,’ he replied, ‘on what this is.’
‘Pick up pretty girls for your daddy?’ I shot back.
Something passed over his face for a moment and settled in his eyes. Something hard. And then, I blinked, and it was gone again.
‘Sure,’ he said, and his voice had changed somehow. Become more reserved, more guarded. Damn. The only person who’d shown me the tiniest bit of normality, and I had just alienated him. As usual, I was running off at the mouth before I thought about what I was actually saying.
‘None as pretty as you, though,’ he added.

Cartel by Lili St. Germain is the first book in her new Cartel series. Having not read the companion series, Gypsy Brothers MC I didn't feel at a loss as to what was going on and from reading more about the book in other reviews, this appears to take place a decade (+ or-) before that series.
Marianna is a tough Colombian girl whose father is a major drunk and loser. The DEA intercepts a truck full of drugs he's delivering and ends up in debt for it's cost AND future retail value to Emilio, head of Il Sangue cartel. When Emilio arrives to make an example, Marianna offers herself to Emilio in an effort to spare her family's lives. He accepts and her life is his from that point forward.
Dornan is Emilio's son and VP of the Gypsy Brothers MC stateside. He is ordered to take Marianna back to their home and watch her. Emilio later shows up anyway, quells her rebellious attitude some by breaking her ribs, and laughs when he notices Dornan forming an attachment to her.
Marianna while tough has her weak moments. A little Stockholm Syndrome appears to set in when she starts feeling an attraction toward Dornan. Dornan is sick and twisted SOB with dark proclivities in and out of the bed.
An interesting read. Enough so that I will definitely bump Gypsy Brothers MC up on my to-read list.
