Excerpt:
The elevator makes a sudden stop and I quickly pick up the tubes and cover my forearm before a group of three casually dressed men, who eye me curiously, step into the lift. I force a smile at one who continues to glance at me from behind his shoulder.
“Wait… aren’t you that—”
I slam my fist to the side of his face, knocking him out, before he can say another word. The other two immediately jump out of the way, but I swiftly reach for the closest one and hit him with the metal pole of the IV drip. I kick the third in the shin, causing him to lurch forward before I slam the edge of my hand on the side of his neck. All three men lie unconscious around me by the time the elevator reaches the bottom floor.
I try to move, and bite my tongue as pain lacerates through my chest. My head is spinning but I can see and sense Ryuu making his way toward me.
I hastily struggle for my own gun still attached to the holster on my belt, barely able to wrap my fingers around it.
Images of Grady and I enjoying our recent time together, and what might have been, flash into my mind as I watch Ryuu raise his gun and point it at my head.
Ryuu is back on his feet, as I predicted, leaning on his stick for support. No matter how injured he is, he’s not going to give up so easily. It’s where I got it from.
I glance down at his mutilated legs and the pools of blood gathering at his feet, and let out a dark laugh. “I’m going to take you down piece by piece. Until every last drop of blood is squeezed from your veins.”
“Grady…” I almost choke on his name.
“I’ve got you, Emery. I’ve always got you.”
“What do you want, Emery?” he says in a forced calm voice. I notice he doesn’t bother to ask about his wife; it’s like deep down he already knows.
“You know what I want, Ryuu, and I’m not leaving until it’s done.”
“You want me dead.”
“Yes, but not before I get answers.”
