Steadfast by Sarina Bowen is the second book in her new True North series. Where book one, Bittersweet, basically was a heartwarming tale of a past encounter reappearing and two people reconnecting, Steadfast is a much more angst filled trip to the dark side. Well, it's not THAT dark, but the author holds back nothing when dealing with the addiction issues that Jude is still dealing with (and will be dealing with for the rest of his life) and with the accident that caused his imprisonment a couple of years ago not just hanging over his head but being shoved in his face now that he is back in his hometown it's all he can do to stay clean. Now let's add in the ex-girlfriend. The sister of the man he killed in the accident those years ago. The sheriff's daughter. Sophie can't believe he's back and while most people would stay away, this is Jude and she just can't. He was always the love of her life and that hasn't changed, unfortunately, despite the tragic events of that night.
What an emotional read. I mean, hello wringer, put me through, I need the feels all squished about and woken up and stuff. I absolutely loved the way this book dealt with Jude's issues, the twist that was a small ray of sunshine in the dark he was becoming consumed by, and the whole second-chance feel of it. LOVED IT!!!
