Blog Tour - Feather Light by Lorenz Font

Welcome to my first ever Blog Tour!!!

Yay! I'm So Excited! Not only do I have a Giveaway for you, I was able to ask the author a few questions about the book, her writing, and life in general

Q&A

How do you manage to balance your full-time job and your writing?

I see writing as a second full-time job, on top of my day job as a Business Office Manager. To be quite honest, it’s hard to excel at both. It’s a constant juggling act on my part to meet deadlines on both ends.
Balance, I’ve found, is a relative term. One must try different methods to find out what works best. In my case, I try not to think of what I have to write while I’m at work. I write notes during my break, or I play scenes inside my head while driving. Wearing several hats can get confusing at times. I have to mentally check myself to make sure I’m not drifting into dreamland while working on numbers. Writing during month-end when we’re closing the books is the toughest for me, so I allow myself a week-long break.Home life is quite easy, in part because my hubby has rallied the kids. The kids responded by taking some of my chores, with hubby bearing the brunt of the heavy load. I’m thankful for everyone stepping up to the plate to help me get more writing time.

I have often heard authors say that their characters speak to them. Do your characters speak to you?

They not only speak to me, but they have a tendency to take over the whole story. I’m sure a lot of people will find this funny. At times I find myself overwhelmed when my characters won’t stop at one scene, egging me on to write more. I’ve gotten a few complaints from my editors regarding the size of my manuscripts. I plead innocence and point at the characters. *smiles*
One thing I find very helpful is to outline the characters, beginning with their physical descriptions, any habits (i.e., chewing gum, twirling a strand of hair, and their manner of speaking), and how they respond to other characters. It helps me visualize them as real, living and breathing people. Once this is accomplished, each character will tell me how to write their dialogues and what their next move will be.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be a cardiologist. *laughs*

Looking back on that childhood dream, are you surprised with who you are now, pleasantly or otherwise?

In a way I am somewhat surprised. Anyone who knows me well could tell you that I wasn’t very enthusiastic about school in general. I went because I was expected to go, but I had no desire to apply myself back in the day. I majored in Literature to get away from math subjects. Then I became an office manager who deals with accounting! Yeah, numbers. You see can see how it got really interesting from there. I stumbled upon writing after reading a novel that inspired me. Now, I’m a cardiologist only in the sense that I write romance. I deal with affairs of the heart, but only indirectly. I prep the patient (characters), perform open heart surgery (plotting), and then I stitch ‘em up with a happy ending.
The premise for Feather Light is very different from any other books I have read in this genre, was there any one thing that triggered you to write this story?Feather Light was a 500-word drabble that I’d shelved two years ago. The storyline of a blind masseur and a famous actress intrigued me. I wanted to create a story that was based on seeing beauty without relying on sight alone.

What type of music do you prefer to listen to?

I listen to just about every genre, although I’m not particularly fond of country and gospel music.

Do you listen to music while writing? (Is there a set playlist of songs or is it random?)

I can’t write without music. It’s difficult to concentrate when all I can hear is the tapping of the keys. My playlist would always have Dave Matthews, Matchbox Twenty, Goo Goo Dolls, John Mayer, Counting Crows, Dave Koz, Maroon 5, and Seether. Pandora usually fills the gap if I require a particular music to match the theme of my story and mood.

Did you read a lot before you began writing? What type of books? Do you still read as much or at all?

I read a lot when I was still in school. There was a period when motherhood didn’t allow much time for reading, but it picked up when the children didn’t require so much attention anymore. I like reading supernatural themes, paranormal romances, and thrillers.

Why have the flawed characters? What is it you find so appealing with them over non-flawed characters?
(I totally love flawed characters, just being nosy :-D )

Your nosey nature shall be rewarded, my dear blogger.  Flawed characters are real. They are regular people; they are us. I see humans as faulty beings. Their struggles can be physical, psychological or emotional in nature. Many are good at hiding their fears and their insecurities to make themselves seem ‘normal’ in our eyes. In this day and age, what do we define as normal anyway? Some have physical disabilities that make life challenging for them. They are not victims or a member of the unlucky crowd. They make themselves winners with their bids for independence and acceptance. There are enough perfect characters out there. A little dose of reality should be a healthy addition to the mix.

What's next for you?

I’m currently writing Ascension, the third installment of The Gates Legacy Trilogy- a paranormal romance. It’s scheduled to be released in May 2014. Following Ascension, I have another contemporary romance that is slated for July release. It’s about a career soldier returning from the war with serious emotional and physical scars. Then I have a young adult novel that I’m finishing up that will be a part of a two-book set.

Any tips or pointers for aspiring writers?

Keep writing, and surround yourself with positive thinkers.
